As the entries have been set for the Winmau World Masters, one glaring name is missing and has withdrawn from illness from the preliminary round which will take place this Wednesday (29 January). That is Raymond van Barneveld.
He is among seven Tour Card Holders who will not travel to the UK to take part in the first round before the big names come in during the first 129 with the top 24 players exempt through to the Televised Stage on Thursday.
All remaining Tour Card holders as well as players from secondary tours including JDC, Women's Series and Affiliate Tours will start in the preliminaries. Van Barneveld though is out due to illness. He is joined by six other players who will not be involved.
Benjamin Drue Reus will lead the other names and he is joined by German ace Tim Wolters. Of the North American and Canadian contingent, Jules van Dongen and new Tour Card holder Jim Long will not make it over. The latter likely has to pick and choose when it comes to stints in the UK with a few ProTour weeks following which likely take precedence over this tournament.
While Rusty-Jake Rodriguez and Stefaan Henderyck are also missing from the preliminaries. This is likely for a myriad of reasons including travelling over merely for one tournament when the ProTour to follow is multiple. As well as time off work with for some this being at a premium due to the mid week nature of the Players Championship and European Tour qualifiers in the weeks that follow.
Van Barneveld though who won through his opener in Den Bosch against Chris Dobey admitted that he nearly withdrew with illness then so it seems like it has got worse in the days that have followed and he has likely aired caution in travelling to the UK for the time being.
