“Really proud of the way I have played” – Tom Sykes seals World Darts Championship debut and Players Championship Finals spot with months to spare

Tom Sykes headed into his first season as a PDC Tour Card holder with two major targets in mind. By early August, he has already achieved both.

After earning his Tour Card at Q School at the beginning of 2026, Sykes wanted to qualify for the Players Championship Finals and secure a debut appearance at the PDC World Darts Championship. A superb first campaign on the professional circuit means neither is now in doubt, despite plenty of darts still to be played before the end of the year.

Sykes currently sits ninth on the ProTour Order of Merit and 35th in the Players Championship rankings, putting him comfortably in position for two of the biggest appearances of his career later this year.

“2 goals I set myself at the beginning of the year was to qualify for the Players Championship Finals and to qualify for the World Championships,” Sykes wrote on X. “Really proud of the way I have played so far this year and accomplished both of my goals with still a fair bit of the year left to go.”

It has been an impressive transition for a player who only joined the full-time PDC circuit at the start of the season. Rather than spending his rookie year simply trying to establish himself and protect his Tour Card, Sykes has quickly put himself in position to feature on two major televised stages.

His position on the ProTour Order of Merit is particularly striking. Sitting ninth at this stage of the campaign puts Sykes alongside and ahead of plenty of far more established Tour Card holders, with his performances across the floor events rapidly building his ranking position.

Qualification for the Players Championship Finals will offer the first reward later in the campaign, before an even bigger landmark arrives at the World Championship.

For Sykes, that will mean a first appearance on the sport’s biggest stage after securing his place far earlier than he could have reasonably needed to at the beginning of the season.

There is also no need for him to treat those qualifications as the finish line. With further ranking events still to come, Sykes has the opportunity to improve his position further and potentially turn an already impressive debut season into something considerably bigger.

The Englishman was quick to recognise those who have helped him reach this point. “Massive thanks to everyone who has supported me and massive thanks to my team and my sponsors for making it all possible,” he added.

With both of the targets he set himself before throwing a dart as a Tour Card holder already accomplished, the pressure of chasing qualification has disappeared. Sykes can now spend the remainder of 2026 trying to see just how much further his breakthrough season can go.
