Michael van Gerwen will not be competing in Players Championships 9 and 10 this week, which are taking place in Wigan. The 35-year-old Dutchman has deliberately chosen to take a break, keeping in mind the busy schedule ahead. His primary focus is on performing well in the major tournaments later this year.

Earlier this year, Van Gerwen also opted out of Players Championships 1, 2, 4, and 8. In the events he did participate in, his best result was a quarter-final finish. Now, 'Mighty Mike' has decided to skip these upcoming tournaments as well.

"He celebrated his son’s birthday last Sunday. On Wednesday, he has a busy media day in Berlin, followed by a Premier League Darts match there on Thursday. Then, over the weekend, he’s playing in a Euro Tour event. So he decided to sit these out," explained his close friend Vincent van der Voort on the Darts Draait Door podcast.

It is not uncommon for top players to skip Players Championship events. These floor tournaments are not as highly regarded as other major competitions, and many elite players take advantage of the opportunity to rest and recover.

"The ProTour season is very long," Van der Voort continued. "During the Premier League, it’s crucial to pick your moments. We are working together towards something bigger, but that’s nearly impossible to achieve during the Premier League. The schedule is brutal—constant matches, travel, and finding time to rest. It’s all part of a carefully planned approach. Our goal is for him to be at his best by the end of the Premier League and into the autumn. Whether that strategy will pay off remains to be seen."

The rest of the PDC Pro Tour will be back in action today at Players Championship 10. As always, you'll be able to follow all of the action and developments of the day right here!
