Rob Cross reached the third round of the
German Darts Championship. He managed to defeat Gian van Veen 6-5 in a tense tie.
But it was van Veen who got the best start in Hildesheim. He immediately broke Cross and then held his own to take a 2-0 lead. Van Veen held that lead until 4-2, but then watched Cross move to 4-4.
Cross held with a 13-darter to leave him needing just one leg to win at 5-4. But Van Veen showed character and forced an eleventh and deciding leg with double 20.
In that 11th leg Cross had the first chance to end the match and on double 16 he sealed van Veen's fate. He concluded with a 99 average, four 180's and 50% on the doubles.
Martin Lukeman qualified for the third round as well. He was too strong for his compatriot Ryan Searle in the second round 6-4.
It was one of his best displays since his breakout 2022 as he saw off Searle who has long been one of the in-form players on the PDC Tour with six 180's in a high scoring display from 'Smash' who will look to evoke memories of his
European Tour final last year.
