Rob Cross reached the final of a World Series of Darts tournament for the second week in a row on Saturday night. Unlike last week in New York City however, this time around Voltage was defeated 8-5 by Gerwyn Price in the final of the Nordic Darts Masters in Copenhagen.
It was the second consecutive week that Price and Cross faced each other in the final of a World Series tournament. The Welshman and Englishman also met last week in the final of the US Darts Masters. Then the win went 8-7 to Cross, who recovered from a 6-4 and 7-6 deficit to win 8-7. Price once again took the lead early in the match. With two 15-darters and two 17-darters 'The Iceman' took a 4-0 lead. It still got exciting after Cross reduced the deficit to 5-4 with a 10-darter. The lead remained with Price, however, who threw an 11-darter for 6-4. Cross then made it 6-5 before Price finally took the match to himself with a 12-darter and a 15-darter.
Cross showed his class afterwards, sending a message of warm congratulations to his opponent in his post-match interview. ''I’m happy for Gezzy,'' the former world champion said graciously. “Gezzy plays well every week and he deserves that. That win will pick him up."
In the end, Cross could live with a second place finish in Copenhagen. ''It wasn’t meant to be tonight,'' Cross continued contentedly. ''But I’m pleased with my game and I’ve got a lot to look forward to.”
The World Series tournament in Denmark was the fourth tournament of the season on the World Series circuit. In January, Luke Littler won the Bahrain Darts Masters, while Michael van Gerwen took the overall victory at the Dutch Darts Masters in Den Bosch. Rob Cross captured the title in early June at the US Darts Masters in New York. Later this year, World Series tournaments will also be played in Poland, Australia and New Zealand before the World Series Finals take place Sept. 13-15 in Amsterdam.
