Rock dumped out at first hurdle by Menzies, Ross Smith flawless in Van Veen win at Players Championship Finals

The first round continues at the Players Championship Finals in Minehead with Cameron Menzies and Ross Smith into Saturday's action after Main Stage wins.

Josh Rock after his recent exploits was installed as one of the favourites and was set for a potential tie with Michael van Gerwen in the second round again after their incredible clash at the Grand Slam of Darts but after a superb display by Menzies, he is out at the first hurdle in his second TV tournament.

The Scot sealed a 6-3 win over 'Rocky' with a 98 average, five 180's and a high checkout of 121 along the way and now will face either Van Gerwen or Ryan Meikle next up.

While Smith also impressed in his opener as he returns to ITV after his triumph at the European Championship and was flawless in seeing off the dangerous Gian van Veen.

It was a 6-2 win for 'Smudger' who was originally set to face Peter Wright, the defending champion but albeit not a late replacement with it recently announced, he stood up to the tag of favourite not missing a dart at the outer ring throughout. Jonny Clayton or John O'Shea await.

While on the outer boards, there have been victories for Mike de Decker who powered past Jim Williams 6-2 to continue his superb form as of late which has gone under the radar, Jermaine Wattimena similarly is having a superb end to the season and saw off Brendan Dolan 6-3.

Krzysztof Ratajski hasn't had the best of years but will look to come good when it matters as he saw off William O'Connor 6-4 also on Stage Two.
