Ross Smith has pulled out of the 2025
Swiss Darts Trophy in Basel, with the PDC confirming the withdrawal was due to family reasons. The development hands a bye to
Ritchie Edhouse, who automatically progresses to Round Three.
Smith’s exit removes one of the more in-form players from the tournament. Having put together a solid season so far, his absence leaves a noticeable gap in the draw — but also offers an unexpected advantage to Edhouse and others in the same section.
Edhouse Shows Composure in Basel
Edhouse has already demonstrated he can handle pressure. In a thrilling Round One match against Wessel Nijman, the reigning European Champion narrowly prevailed 6‑5, clinching the decider with a composed 80 checkout.
The match was a tense, see-sawing affair. Nijman had the chance to close it out at 5‑3 but faltered, allowing Edhouse to seize the initiative. Edhouse broke throw in the seventh leg to take the lead, and despite early legs where both players held throw, he remained steady under pressure. While averages hovered in the mid-80s, the match was won on nerve rather than fireworks, showcasing Edhouse’s calmness in critical moments.

Ross Smith’s 2025 Form
Smith has had a strong if ultimately unsuccessful year on the Euro Tour in 2025. He enjoyed a standout performance at Players Championship 16, where he hit two nine-dart finishes and produced a dominant run through the event. Consistently hitting high scores and posting impressive averages, Smith has shown he can challenge anyone on his day. Despite not yet claiming a
European Tour title in 2025, his deep runs and steady form have kept him among the sport’s most dangerous competitors.
His withdrawal is a setback for his tournament ambitions but understandable given the family reasons. For the Swiss Darts Trophy, it slightly alters the competitive landscape, opening up opportunities for other contenders.
