We have now progressed to the third day of the World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace in London. During the afternoon session we get Kevin Doets facing Noa-Lynn van Leuven, while Mike de Decker also starts his tournament.

The first three matches of the afternoon will be first-round duels. The afternoon session will conclude with a match from the second round. The winner of that match may return for the third round of the World Darts Championship after the Christmas break.

James Hurrell v Jim Long (R1)

The afternoon begins with a clash between James Hurrell and Jim Long, who are not only vying for a spot in the second round, but also for the right to play against Michael van Gerwen in the second round. For Hurrell, this match marks his debut at the PDC's World Darts Championship, after previously making a name for himself at the iconic Lakeside tournament. There, he reached the quarterfinals in 2022. This year, as a brand new Tour Card holder, Hurrell reached the quarterfinals three times on the Pro Tour.

On the other side is Canadian Jim Long, who already entered the World Championship stage once in 2019. Back then, he defeated Mickey Mansell in the first round, before losing to Benito van de Pas. Long qualified through the North American Tour, where he finished second.

Kevin Doets v Noa-Lynn van Leuven (R1)

The second game brings a unique Dutch confrontation between Kevin Doets and Noa-Lynn van Leuven. For Doets, this is his second consecutive World Championship participation. Last year he impressed by defeating Stowe Buntz and almost surprising defending champion Michael Smith. Although he lost after a lead, Doets showed he has the talent to make things difficult for the top players. His steady performance on the Pro Tour, with multiple quarterfinal finishes, underscore that "Hawkeye" has taken another step in his development this year.

Van Leuven is making history as the first transgender player at the PDC World Darts Championship. Through the Women's Series, in which she finished second, she qualified for this prestigious tournament. Although her debut at the Grand Slam of Darts recently was less successful, she gained valuable experience against top players such as Michael van Gerwen and Gary Anderson. This is a chance for Van Leuven to make history and show that she can excel on this stage as well. The winner of the all-Dutch duel will meet former world champion Michael Smith in the last 64.

Ryan Joyce v Darius Labanauskas (R1)

Ryan Joyce and Darius Labanauskas face each other in the third match of the afternoon. Both players have impressed before at the World Cup: Joyce reached the quarterfinals in 2019, while Labanauskas did so a year later in 2020. Joyce, usually razor-sharp on the doubles, is playing his seventh World Championship and sealed his spot through the Pro Tour. He showed strong performances this year with a final place and a semifinal on the Pro Tour circuit. Joyce has proven to be a player who stays under the radar, but at the same time is not afraid to win against big names.

Labanauskas earned his World Championship spot through the PDCNB Tour. This is his sixth World Championship entry, during which he almost always survived the first round. The Lithuanian leads in mutual meetings with Joyce (3-1) and will draw confidence from that statistic. The winner of this duel gets to face Dutchman Danny Noppert in the second round.

Mike De Decker v Luke Woodhouse (R2)

The afternoon will conclude with a second-round match between Mike De Decker and Luke Woodhouse. De Decker experienced a breakthrough this year by surprisingly winning the World Grand Prix. With that performance, he elevated himself to a new status and is now among the outsiders for the world title. Yet De Decker has never before reached the third round of the World Cup.

His opponent, Luke Woodhouse, had to start as early as the first round but did not have to put in excessive effort. He defeated Lourence Ilagan with a convincing 3-0. Both players faced each other earlier this year on the Euro Tour, where De Decker was victorious 6-3. The Belgian leads 2-1 in mutual encounters, but Woodhouse will be keen to redress that balance. The stakes are high: whoever wins will qualify for the third round and may return to Ally Pally after Christmas.

Prize money

The 96 participants at the 2025 World Darts Championship may divide as much as 2.5 million pounds between them. That amount is almost forty times higher than at the very first edition of the PDC World Championship in 1994.

The 64 participants to start in the first round of the World Darts Championship will receive £7500 in prize money anyway. The top-32 of the placement list are guaranteed 15,000 pounds. These players enter the World Darts Championship from the second round. The amount then increases further each round. The new world champion will receive the top prize of 500,000 pounds.

Format

First round: Best of 5 sets

Second round: Best of 5 sets

Third round: Best of 7 sets

Fourth round: Best of 7 sets

Quarterfinals: Best of 9 sets

Semifinals: Best of 11 sets

Final: Best of 13 sets

In the first round, there will be no tiebreak if it is 2-2 after four legs in the fifth set. In that case, the fifth leg will be sudden-death. Starting from the second round, a tie-break rule will be applied in all matches; a deciding set must be won with a difference of two legs. If the score in the final set becomes 5-5, a sudden-death leg will still be played.
