Sunday night we continue the group stage of the 2024
Grand Slam of Darts, when the second pool matches from Groups A-E-F-G are scheduled in Wolverhampton.
The players who won their match on Saturday night will play in their second match against the other player from the pool who started the tournament with a win. Naturally, the two losers from each pool will then also face each other.
In Group A, it may already be straight up or down for
Luke Humphries and James Wade, the two favorites in this group. However, both started their tournament surprisingly with a defeat. Humphries lost to Rowby-John Rodriguez, while Wade was surprised by Mickey Mansell. The latter can take a giant step towards reaching the knockout stage of the Grand Slam of Darts against Rowby-John Rodriguez.
Michael Smith is currently the leader in Group E, after he was too strong for Mensur Suljovic on Saturday night, 5-2. 'Bullyboy' now faces Jermaine Wattimena, who recorded a fine 5-2 victory over Mike De Decker. Suljovic and De Decker will want to take revenge for their earlier defeat and will decide between them who has a chance of reaching the last sixteen.
Luke Littler had a phenomenal debut at the Grand Slam of Darts on Saturday night. 'The Nuke' pulverized Keane Barry 5-0 in just six minutes, throwing an average of 112.16 in the process. Earlier this year, Littler was eliminated early at the World Matchplay, World Grand Prix and the European Darts Championship, leaving the teenage sensation determined to put up a good performance in Wolverhampton. With a win over Dimitri van den Bergh, Littler may already be able to secure a spot in the eighth finals. Barry will take on Lourence Ilagan, who lost 5-1 to Van den Bergh in his pool match.
Group G is the group of
Michael van Gerwen,
Gary Anderson and Noa-Lynn van Leuven. They already met on Saturday night and then it was Van Gerwen who won 5-0. The other match in this group was not exciting either, as Gary Anderson made light work of Ryan Joyce (5-1) with an average of 113. Van Gerwen and Anderson will thus determine who will be in prime position for a spot in the second round of the Grand Slam of Darts, while Van Leuven and Joyce may be fighting for their last chance.
How can you watch the Grand Slam of Darts on TV?
Sky Sports will show the tournament in full in the UK. As usual, the tournament begins with a group stage with eight groups of four players each. The group stage takes place from Saturday through Tuesday, with all players playing three times.
The top two players from each group will advance to the knockout phase. Starting Wednesday, Nov. 13, the knockout phase will begin with the first matches of the final sixteen. This round will be completed on Thursday, Nov. 14. The quarter-finals will be played on Friday, Nov. 15, and Saturday, Nov. 16, before the semifinals and finals are finished on Sunday, Nov. 17.
How much prize money is up for grabs?
The event has been part of the PDC calendar since 2007. Back then, the prize pool already included £300,000, with £80,000 going to the winner. The prize pool was thrown up a few times in the following years, and in 2019 more than half a million prize money was distributed at the Grand Slam of Darts for the first time. Since the 2022 edition, the prize pool includes £650,000.
Every participant in the Grand Slam of Darts is guaranteed £5,000, which is the prize money you will be paid if you finish last in your pool. This amount can eventually go up to a sum of 150,000 pounds for the winner of the tournament. The players who win their pools in the group stage receive a bonus of 3,500 pounds. The Grand Slam has been a ranking tournament since 2015, so the prize money won counts toward the PDC Order of Merit.
