In groups B-C-D-H, the second series of group matches were played Sunday afternoon at the Grand Slam of Darts. Two players can already extend their stay in Wolverhampton, while two players already know they will not make it past the group stage.
Danny Noppert took a big step towards the knockout stage in Group B on Sunday afternoon, but with two wins from two duels, 'The Freeze' is not yet completely sure of a spot in the last sixteen. Behind Noppert, Menzies and Schindler are on two points, while Greaves is still scoreless. Noppert needs four legs in his final game to finish in the top two. The same goes for Menzies if he wins by at least two legs from Greaves.
Martin Lukeman is currently the leader in Group C after victories over Peter Wright (5-0) and Rob Cross (5-3). With a match against Leonard Gates still ahead, Lukeman is two legs away from a spot in the Last 16. Wright is all but certain to be eliminated after defeats. Only a 5-0 win over Cross could still work out well for Wright. Cross holds the second spot and will have to try to match Gates' result against Lukeman in his final match against Wright.
The reigning European Championship winner Ritchie Edhouse will be back in the last sixteen anyway. After a 5-1 win over Ross Smith, 'The Madhouse' also won 5-2 from Connor Scutt, leaving Dave Chisnall with two defeats and a final elimination in Group D. Smith and Scutt will decide in a mutual duel who will advance with Edhouse to the knockout stage in Wolverhampton.
Gian van Veen was perhaps given the fewest chances in the pool of death prior to the tournament, but after two group matches 'GVV The Giant' is the only one already sure of a place in the eighth finals. In Group H Van Veen scored fine victories over Josh Rock (5-2) and Stephen Bunting (5-1) with averages of 110 and 114.
Nijman is eliminated after two games, although the Dutchman still has a match against Van Veen remaining. Rock and Bunting will decide in a decider who will go through this group with Van Veen.
