Sunday evening marks the conclusion of the 2024 Hungarian Darts Trophy with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. There is one clear favourite, but as has been seen in the past, anything can happen Sunday night on the European Tour!
The Hungarian Darts Trophy is on the program for the fourth time. In 2021, Gerwyn Price managed to win the very first edition by beating Michael Smith 8-2 in the final. A year later, the title went to Joe Cullen, who was too strong for William O'Connor in a surprising 8-2 final. In 2023, Dave Chisnall took the title by beating Luke Humphries in the final. All previous winners are already out of the tournament, so there will be a new name on the honour roll anyway.
In the first quarterfinal, Daryl Gurney and Ryan Searle face each other. Gurney was responsible for eliminating defending champion Dave Chisnall (6-5) at the last sixteen, while he also previously won over Florian Hempel (6-5). Searle made it to the quarter-finals with wins over Alberto Bezjian (6-1) and Peter Wright (6-1).
Searle has a remarkably good record against his upcoming Northern Irish opponent. Gurney won two of the first three duels between them, but the last seven confrontations were all won by Searle. They met three times already this season on the Euro Tour. Although Searle won all these encounters, it was exciting each time. Twice it was 6-5, and once Searle took the win 6-4.
At least one Dutchman will join the last four, as Wessel Nijman and Gian van Veen will compete in the second match of the evening. Nijman started his tournament with a 6-0 win over György Jehirszki and then caused a surprise by beating Gerwyn Price 6-5. After that, Nijman also recorded a convincing 6-1 victory over Scott Williams.
Van Veen started his participation in Budapest with a difficult 6-4 victory over Keane Barry. In the third round he then also met a compatriot. Danny Noppert was defeated 6-3 after a high quality match.
It is already the eleventh time Nijman and Van Veen meet on the PDC circuit, although the previous duels almost all took place on the youth circuit. Six times Van Veen won and four times Nijman.
One leg was all Ross Smith had to play Sunday afternoon to qualify for the quarter-finals of this tournament. After his 6-2 victory over Raymond van Barneveld he saw his opponent Ricardo Pietreczko give up after only one leg because of a wrist injury. Bunting faced a nine darter for the second time this tournament. After Cor Dekker threw a perfect leg against him on Saturday, Martin Schindler repeated this performance in the third round. In the end, however, Bunting won 6-4 over the German.
It will be the fourth time this season that the two Englishmen have faced each other. Two of the three previous duels were won by Bunting, who also holds a comfortable 11-4 lead in the head-to-head.
Finally, Michael van Gerwen and Josh Rock will decide between themselves who will be the last semi-finalist at the Hungarian Darts Trophy. Van Gerwen has not really been tested yet this tournament and recorded easy victories over both Martin Lukeman (6-2) and Gabriel Clemens (6-2). In addition, 'Mighty Mike' provided a highlight in the second round by throwing a nine-darter.
Rock escaped elimination in the second round when James Wade missed eight match darts to eliminate the Northern Irishman. 'Rocky' eventually beat Wade 6-5 and then also triumphed 6-4 against Rob Cross to reach the last eight.
Van Gerwen and Rock previously played each other seven times before. Five times the victory went to Van Gerwen, and twice Rock walked away with the win. The last meeting between them was at the World Grand Prix in 2023, where Van Gerwen won 2-0 in sets.
The Hungarian Darts Trophy will be broadcast on PDC TV. As usual with Euro Tour tournaments, the Hungarian Darts Trophy consists of three tournament days. The afternoon sessions start daily at 12:00, while the evening sessions start at 18:00.
The first round will take place on Friday. The 16 Order of Merit qualifiers and the winners from the various qualifying tournaments then make their appearance. The top-16 seeded players enter the tournament on Saturday in the second round. Sunday will see the denouement of the tournament, starting with the third round in the afternoon session. Sunday evening will be followed by the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals.
At this Euro Tour tournament, a total of £175,000 in prize money will be divided among the 48 participants. They will receive at least 1250 pounds in starting money. The top-16 seeded players who enter the Hungarian Darts Trophy from the second round will receive 2,500 pounds anyway.
They do - like the 16 Order of Merit qualifiers starting in the first round - have to win their first match in order for the prize money to count toward the world rankings and the other rankings. The winner of the Hungarian Darts Trophy eventually goes home with the top prize of 30,000 pounds.
