Players have been able to enjoy Christmas with their families over the past few days, but now it is time for the big time again. The World Darts Championship 2025 resumes with the start of the third round.

During the third round of the World Darts Championship, players need four sets won to qualify for the last sixteen of the World Darts Championship. The fourth round will take place on Dec. 29 and 30.

Damon Heta v Luke Woodhouse

Damon Heta, the Australian number one and seeded ninth in this tournament, is looking for his big break at a major tournament. 'The Heat' had a tough first match, but the dangerous Connor Scutt ended up being no banana skin for Heta, who prevailed 3-1 in sets with an average of 97.

Luke Woodhouse qualified for the last 32 at the World Darts Championship for the second time in his career. 'The Shed' did so quite early in the tournament, as Woodhouse was already in action on Dec. 16 and 17. Woodhouse first triumphed easily 3-0 in sets against Lourence Ilagan, and then recorded a handsome 3-1 victory over Mike de Decker.

Over the years, Heta and Woodhouse have faced each other 12 times at the PDC, and even once on the World Cup stage. At the 2022 World Darts Championship, they met in the second round. Then the victory went 3-1 to Heta. The Australian leads 8-4 in the overall head to head, having won five of the last six matches with Woodhouse.

Jonny Clayton v Daryl Gurney

It took Jonny Clayton a particular pain and effort to join the last 32 at the World Darts Championship. It was edge-to-edge against Mickey Mansell, who forced Clayton to play a decisive sudden-death leg. Moments before, Clayton had made up an 0-2 deficit in the final set, and on top of that, 'The Ferret' also survived a matchdart. The leg-decider eventually went to Clayton, making his sixth consecutive third-round appearance at Alexandra Palace.

Daryl Gurney showed resilience in the second round by coming back strong after a lost first set and beating Florian Hempel, averaging over 100 in two sets. Overall, it was also a strong performance by "Superchin," who posted an average of 98 and a finishing percentage of 45 percent. For the sixth time in seven years, he too is in the last 32 at the World Darts Championship.

The head-to-head between the two players is 5-2 in Gurney's favor, although it will be the very first time both players will cross swords at a televised tournament. Two of the last three meetings were won by Clayton, who beat Gurney at a Players Championship tournament in September.

Stephen Bunting v Madars Razma

Surely Stephen Bunting escaped major trouble in his previous match against Kai Gotthardt. His German opponent had won the first set and had three chances to make it 2-0 in sets. Gotthardt missed them all, after which the set went to Bunting. It was the turning point in the match and 'The Bullet' won 3-1 in sets.

Madars Razma was already responsible for the elimination of two Dutch players at this tournament. In the first round he saw Christian Kist throw a nine darter, but Razma recovered from a set deficit to beat 'The Lipstick' 3-1 in sets. Against Dirk van Duijvenbode, Razma again fell a set behind, and also trailed 2-0 in the second set. From that point on, the best darter from Latvia won six legs in a row, and eventually the match 3-1. By winning against Bunting, Razma advances to the last sixteen of the World Championships for the first time in his career.

It has been some time since the two players met at a tournament. The last time was at a Players Championship tournament in May 2022. Then Bunting won 6-5. The Englishman leads 5-1 overall head to head wise.

Prize money

The 96 participants at the 2025 World Darts Championship may divide as much as 2.5 million pounds between them. That amount is almost forty times higher than at the very first edition of the PDC Worlds in 1994.

The 64 participants to start in the first round of the World Darts Championship will receive £7500 in prize money anyway. The top-32 of the placement list are guaranteed 15,000 pounds. These players enter the World Darts Championship from the second round. The amount then increases further each round. The new world champion will receive the top prize of 500,000 pounds.

Format

First round: Best of 5 sets

Second round: Best of 5 sets

Third round: Best of 7 sets

Fourth round: Best of 7 sets

Quarterfinals: Best of 9 sets

Semifinals: Best of 11 sets

Final: Best of 13 sets

In the first round, there will be no tiebreak if it is 2-2 after four legs in the fifth set. In that case, the fifth leg will be sudden-death. Starting from the second round, a tie-break rule will be applied in all matches; a deciding set must be won with a difference of two legs. If the score in the final set becomes 5-5, a sudden-death leg will still be played.
