Michael van Gerwen has suffered another shock defeat this time at the German Darts Masters to Martin Schindler who mounted an incredible comeback to slay the World Number One.
Van Gerwen was 5-1 up and seemingly cruising to a statement making win after his troubles at times as of late but he got too comfortable and allowed Schindler back into the tie.
From there he wrapped up five consecutive legs against the World Number One to record a brilliant win. It is also for Mighty Mike another match where he averaged less than 100 despite doing so for the most part at the beginning of the contest when he cruised to that lead.
It is worrying times for Van Gerwen especially with the World Matchplay coming up next weekend, a tournament he will be wanting to make a big statement in considering he has lost out in the past two years; can he return to form in Blackpool, only time will tell.
Rob Cross edged out Max Hopp in the final game of the night meaning he didn't also succumb to a shock in Cologne as he saw off 'The Maximiser' 6-4 in the end.
Hopp ended up averaging 106 to Cross's 101 but in the end it was the finishing that did it for the former World Champion.
He ended up hitting 6/6 on the doubles alongside three 180's as he edged out the German Number One in probably one of the toughest draws of the first round.
'Voltage' moved ahead in the contest initially at 4-2 up after Hopp had been 2-1 up but it went back to 4-4. A classy 11 darter though stole the tie back into Cross's favour and from there he finished off the job to defy the partisan crowd and move into the second day of action.
