Scott Williams has emerged as a real breakout star of 2022 with 'Shaggy' setting both the ProTour and the Challenge Tour alight as an Associate Member with goals already achieved for a big back end of the year.
"It's been a fantastic year and hopefully it's going to get better. Obviously the big ones are coming at the end of the year that I know I've qualified for in the World's and the Players Championship Finals at Minehead so I'm really excited for the next few months," said Williams to Online Darts.
"In your head only up until recently that I am just having constant fun and thinking I deserve to be there but I got lucky to be here and I've kept it rolling since. I never feared anyone and I still don't fear anyone. Playing on the Euro Tour is what I'm here for, playing on the stages is what I like to do."
Among those accolades include a maiden title on the ProTour as he showed his constant improvement in a march to the title but it was a different feeling than expected.
"It was a mixed reaction as I had people behind the scenes watching and they were really happy for me but I wasn't happy as I wanted to be as you look at averages. Sub 90 average for the whole day which is one of the lowest ever when it comes to a Players Championship win but then I look back at some of the games - 11 darter against Jonny Clayton in the deciding leg, 11 dart leg against Rob Cross when 5-4 up etc. I was just doing the right things at the right times."
World's, PC Finals and maybe more
Now Williams is firmly looking up with at least two majors confirmed and he cannot wait for his Ally Pally debut albeit with one eyed fixed on further majors.
"I'm so excited, I can't wait. As soon as I got on the ProTours, that was my goal to qualify for one of them. I knew I got in the top two in the Challenge Tour, I'd get a spot. But there's still World Grand Prix to play for, Euro Tours (for European Championship), Grand Slam of Darts which I'm currently in for winning a ProTour plus if I win the Challenge Tour. It started if I get there fantastic, now I'm like I want to get there, that's where I want to be."
One of those that he missed though was the World Matchplay and he was frank on just missing out.
"It was really tough, it came at the wrong time. It came in a spell where I couldn't win a game. I knew in my head that something wasn't right, my release wasn't correct. Then the Challenge Tour was a week later which clashed with the Matchplay, obviously if I got in the Matchplay I'd basically have a Tour Card but I went to the Challenge Tour and I was the same really struggling."
Tour Card dilemma
A dilemma will likely head the way of Williams due to his year as he finds himself in a unique position. Top of the Challenge Tour but currently in the top 64, it is unknown whether he will continue as a rolling Tour Card holder or will start anew from the Challenge Tour.
"I don't know if I get to pick. I don't know if it goes on the top 64, or it goes I take that top spot on the Challenge Tour and start afresh. But with the fact that I won't have any money coming off and I'll have pretty much a free year to get myself up to the top 32 as given the money I've earned this year it's certainly possible, I would look at taking the one year rolling."
