Michael van Gerwen has won the
Players Championship Finals for the seventh time in his career after an incredible win over Rob Cross 11-6 including a stunning nine-dart finish which set the tone for the rest of the tie for the Green Machine.
Van Gerwen produced eight 180's, 50% on the doubles and a 170 checkout which stopped a Cross comeback in his tracks as he went on to surge to victory from there. He adds to a superb major title haul this year which includes the Premier League, World Matchplay, World Grand Prix and now the Players Championship Finals.
Heading into tomorrow's PDC World Darts Championship draw, MVG will be installed as favourite as he looks to finally seal a fourth World title and has sent out a statement as he looks to do so.
After that nine-dart finish to go 2-1 up, he followed it with a 12-dart break to go 4-1 ahead and leave Cross in the dust. This meant 'Voltage' upped his game and nearly had a nine-dart finish of his own with a stunning passage of play where both kept leaving chances for the perfect leg.
He went 5-2 down but again six perfect darts allowed MVG a 6-2 lead and he did so again at 7-3 averaging 109. Cross began his comeback with a 90 checkout using two double 18's and took it to within one at 7-6.
Before having the door slammed shut in his face with a 170 checkout after missing 41 for parity, from there a clinical 70 checkout break saw MVG go two away and a 142 checkout truly sealed it as he went on to win 11-6.
