Smith saw off Van Gerwen in a brilliant win at the Belgian Darts Championship; he threatened for it to be more emphatic than the end scoreline suggested.
He was 6-1 up and seemingly cruising to victory with a blistering 110 average; but as Van Gerwen started to get back into the contest, the doubts would have set in for Smith who up to tonight had never beaten him in the Premier League.
This saw him miss three match darts which allowed Van Gerwen a potentially pivotal break at 6-3 down; he made it 6-4 with a hold to ask the question.
It was a question that in the end was answered by 'Bully Boy' who will hopefully take massive confidence from this into the UK Open in Minehead having added two important points to his tally.
