Two big names have failed to get away to winning starts at the Grand Slam of Darts as Damon Heta and Nathan Aspinall suffered surprise defeats to Jermaine Wattimena and Alan Soutar on the opening night in Wolverhampton.
Wattimena perhaps more surprising given his form on TV in previous majors but looking at his ProTour form like Soutar, there have been signs to point to a resurgence and this was in full force here.
'Machine Gun' rattled 'The Heat' with a clinical display sealing it 5-2 with a 97 average and 35.7% on the doubles with the Aussie ace missing six darts in total throughout the contest out of his eight attempts in defeat. Now for Wattimena is the winner of Jonny Clayton or Leonard Gates in the last match tonight.
While Aspinall who has become somewhat of the comeback king as of late especially on the European Tour with some superb great escapes nearly had another Houdini act up his sleeve but was stopped in his tracks by Soutar.
Soutar who showed such promise last season has recently tweaked aspects of his setup and has been reaping the rewards on the ProTour and sealed a 5-4 win over 'The Asp' in the group that also includes Peter Wright and Fallon Sherrock.
It was sealed in style by the Scot too as he produced a 145 checkout in the decider but potentially could have had it sewn up earlier after easing into a 3-1 lead.
But back came Aspinall who broke to go 3-2 down and sealed parity from there. Soutar though continued to lead and hit an 82 checkout to make it 4-3. It went with throw from there with a 97 checkout from Aspinall followed by the big blockbuster shot.
