Peter Wright was far from his best but eased past Fallon Sherrock in a 5-1 win to begin his account at the Grand Slam of Darts and set up an all Scottish affair tomorrow with Alan Soutar.
Sherrock on the other hand will face a tough task to keep her Grand Slam survival hopes with Nathan Aspinall awaiting and with an inferior leg difference now due to the close nature of 'The Asp's defeat.
Early on, Wright was superb but began to slip averaging only 87 in the end but like Sherrock's year so far, those chances couldn't be pounced on and it was a routine win in the end.
A 180 and double eight saw Wright seal an opening break and a bright start for ‘Snakebite’. It was another maximum for ‘Snakebite’ but he was nearly broken back after missing 61, Sherrock wired 105 for 1-1 but Wright made it 2-0.
Sherrock managed to hold throw and Wright was not at his superb best which started the game. This allowed the Queen of the Palace to hit a 180 and take the impetus on his throw.
Sherrock missed 107 on double 20 but returned with Wright unable to dent 140 albeit he was back after Sherrock missed three for a break and he pinched an 80 checkout on double 11 for 3-1.
Sherrock slid into single seven and then into double 17 meaning she didn’t get a shot at 56 and Wright hit 51 for a 4-1 lead and was throwing for the win. He missed 78 for the match but was back for double 20 for the victory.
While in a hotly anticipated tie due to both being two of the brightest talents in darts this year, Luke Humphries took the spoils in Group H and will face Ryan Searle tomorrow after seeing off debutant Scott Williams 5-2.
Missed doubles blighted 'Shaggy' to begin the tie and Humphries eased into a 3-0 lead. Williams finally found his form going 3-1 down with a break before consolidating at 3-2.
But a 14-darter on double 16 to hold followed by another break to win it in style with a 121 checkout on the bull saw 'Cool Hand Luke' live up to his billing as favourite.
