Michael van Gerwen will want to forget last week quickly. 'Mighty Mike' withdrew in Rosmalen and then was also sick on stage during the third Premier League Darts night in Dublin.
The Dutchman already lost to an amateur in the first round at Players Championship 3 last week before he withdrew from PC4. The cause? Illness. Vincent van der Voort spoke to his good friend as recently as the morning before the Players Championship tournament and said in the Sportnieuws.nl podcast Darts Draait Door, "The night before he suddenly had a fever and quite a sore throat."
Van Gerwen was struggling with a gout attack in his foot, something Van der Voort himself is not unfamiliar with either. "All in all, he woke up in the morning and then of course it's all worse. He didn't feel so good. He asked me if I was still going (to Rosmalen for the second floor tournament), but I wasn't going anyway. Then he said he would just skip then, too. I think it was wise, because he had quite a throat infection afterwards."
Also during the third Premier League Darts evening in Dublin, 'MVG' was still suffering from pain in his foot and laryngitis. He still managed to beat Chris Dobey in the quarterfinals, but in the semi-final against Aspinall he looked 'limp', according to 49-year-old dart player. "By circumstances, that first match was reasonable. He really didn't feel well and his foot hurt a lot."
According to Van der Voort, Van Gerwen is on the mend now. "It wasn't that bad, because he could just play. It wasn't optimal. But now he is okay again. After Dublin he went home Friday morning and had a long weekend off. So he's ben ok for a while," said 'The Dutch Destroyer'
It is to be hoped for Van Gerwen that he is fit again for the Premier League night next Thursday, as he will need to score points in Exeter. In addition, next weekend with UK Open, there is also an important tournament on the schedule for the Dutchman. "There has to be performance there, especially if you look at Michael's ranking and such. This is one of those moments where he has to step up again."
