Mensur Suljovic has began the second night of action at the World Matchplay in sublime fashion playing out a tie break thriller against Jamie Hughes.
Suljovic succumbed to a comeback from Hughes; but had to make a mini one of his own coming from 9-7 down to win 12-10; with a flourish which saw two ton plus finishes in a row to win it. In all, he hit a 100.5 average, 10 180's and five ton plus finishes.
Suljovic started better of the two and sat at 3-1 with a break of throw which saw both players hit five 180's in three legs. This saw the former reach an average of 111; Hughes at one point was sat on 108.
'The Gentle' stretched his lead to 4-1 with a 101 checkout; but despite that, 'Yozza' wasn't out of it. He held his throw hitting a fourth 180 and an 83 checkout for a 12-darter to make it 4-2.
A timely break saw him go within one at 4-3 down; but Suljovic himself replied with a break of his own hitting an 11-darter for a 5-3 advantage.
This didn't last long though with Hughes pouncing; after Suljovic missed the bull for a 121 checkout and he replied with double eight to make it 5-4.
It was parity with Hughes coming from 4-1 down to get back level. Both players were averaging around 103 and hit five 180's a piece showing some top quality darts to begin the second day of action.
Hughes was two clear though with a 118 checkout seeing him go 8-6 up and despite Suljovic himself hitting a 108 checkout to peg it back to 7-8, the former kept him at arms length with a 65 checkout to go one away at 9-7.
It was up to the Tipton ace to serve it out and Suljovic kept himself in it with a 117 checkout to apply the pressure. He missed a match dart at the bull and Suljovic forced overtime at 9-9.
He went 10-9 up to go one away himself. A 61 checkout saw Hughes level once more, he missed a 42 checkout and Suljovic replied with a brilliant 127 checkout. It was two in a row with an 112 checkout sealing the deal for the Austrian.
