Gerwyn Price's Premier League Darts night in Rotterdam didn't go to plan for the Welshman last Thursday night as he fell to a 6-3 quarter-final defeat against Nathan Aspinall on Night 11. Afterwards Price took to his official Instagram to vent his frustrations in a move that has caused much discussion in the darting world since.
"Gutted for myself, gutted for everyone that supports me. I'm so sorry but this week was pointless and we move (on) to next week. Darts were blowing everywhere and after leg one which was lucky I knew it was pointless," said Price on Instagram. "Where I was in the league after vital points it's not what I wanted. Hopefully PDC will now stop coming here and look for alternative venues. Not good for the players, not good for the fans and not good for people that like a bet. Onto next week where we get to play in decent conditions."
As mentioned, Price hasn't exactly received universal support since, with ex-pro Vincent van der Voort notably speaking out against the Welshman. “He does this more often. And I don’t think that’s very brave. If you have an opinion, stick to it. Now he’s shared it and then backed down,” said the Dutchman on his Darts Draait Door podcast. “Maybe the PDC reached out to him, or he cooled off on his own. But it happens regularly. You post something in the heat of the moment, but once you realise the impact, you pull it down. Still, you know what you’re doing—so have the courage to leave it up.”
Joining the debate, Price's comments were discussed on the latest episode of Sky Sports' Love the Darts podcast. "There was a little bit of a draft, it was a bit cold up on that stage, but everybody has got to deal with it and cope with whatever the conditions are," begins the face of Sky Sports' Premier League Darts coverage, Emma Paton.
"It is annoying for the players because they want these perfect conditions," adds PDC Women's Series star Laura Turner. "But it's a tough one. Because in these big arenas there is always going to be some things that affect the players like that. So it's a difficult one for the PDC and I know they said they've tried to address it."
"Some of the players had it in their heads before they even went on stage," comments commentator Chris Murphy. "With Gerwyn Price, I like the fact he's outspoken and he speaks his mind, but I do take it with a pinch of salt. There's always the thought of when's he going to tweet, then when is he going to delete it? He'll move on from it. The lesson is just give yourself an hour to cool down."
