The new ranking season got underway last weekend with the Winmau World Masters in Milton Keynes. Luke Humphries was able to take the title and thus managed to strike an important blow immediately.

The Winmau World Masters was a new ranking tournament, so Humphries did not yet have to defend any prize money. That will change later this year, as a sizable portion of his amount on the PDC Order of Merit will be at stake. Between October 2023 and January 2024, Humphries won consecutively the World Grand Prix, Grand Slam of Darts, Players Championship Finals and the World Darts Championship. All results that Humphries must now defend.

This season, Humphries must defend 1,154,750 pounds, 64 percent of his total. By comparison; Littler only has to defend 202,500 pounds. Van Gerwen earned 338,500 pounds in 2023 ranking money, which is 41.51 percent of his prize money in the current world rankings.

In addition to Humphries and Van Gerwen, Rob Cross (£339,750), Gerwyn Price (£312,000) and Nathan Aspinall (£329,500) are the other players who must defend more than three tons. For these three players, it concerns more than 60 percent of their amount they currently have on the ranking. Certainly Aspinall must fear a free fall in the world rankings. He won the 2023 World Matchplay and thus must defend 200,000 pounds of prize money in July. An early exit in Blackpool could see 'The Asp' drop out of the top-32 just like that.

Another player with a relatively large amount of prize money to defend is Andrew Gilding, the surprise winner of the 2023 UK Open. That performance earned him £110,000 at the time, leaving him with £400,500 in the rankings today. Should Gilding be eliminated early in Minehead, Gilding also appears to fear for his position among the 32 best darters in the world.
