The World Matchplay is known as one of the most prestigious darts tournaments in the world. Many top players make the trip to the Winter Gardens in Blackpool to compete for the coveted Phil Taylor Trophy.
Since the start of the tournament in 1994, we have seen 12 different winners, with names such as Phil Taylor, Colin Lloyd, James Wade, Michael van Gerwen, Gary Anderson and last year's winner Nathan Aspinall. In all those years a lot of 180 scores have been thrown and in this article you will read which players have thrown the most 180s in one World Matchplay with the help of Darts Orakel.
At the top of the list is Adrian Lewis, who managed to throw a total of 56 180s in the 2013 edition. That year he managed to reach the final via Ronnie Huybrechts (10-5 win), Brendan Dolan (13-5 win), Andy Hamilton (19-17 win) and Michael van Gerwen (17-15 win), where he faced the legendary Phil Taylor. In that duel, 'The Jackpot' managed to throw a total of no less than 19(!) 180s, which is also a record, but eventually lost 18-13.
The number two is Gary Anderson, who in 2018 managed to win the tournament for the first time in his career. In the first round, he managed to beat Stephen Bunting 10-7 and threw five 180s. The match after that, the Scot beat Raymond van Barneveld 11-9 and again managed to throw five 180s. The quarterfinals were a real cracker against Joe Cullen. Anderson eventually prevailed, winning 19-17 with twelve 180s.
In the semi-final that followed, 'The Flying Scotsman' decided to step it up a notch. He recorded an average of 106.06, threw 16 180's and eventually beat Jeffrey de Zwaan, who surprisingly made it to the semifinals, 17-12. The final was another very exciting match. Anderson played Mensur Suljovic and both men were evenly matched until the end of the match. In the end the Scot was the better player, winning 21-19 with fourteen maximum scores.
Gary Anderson managed to throw 180 a total of 52 times during the 2018 World Matchplay.

Third in this list we find Dimitri van de Bergh who managed to throw a total of 49 180s in 2021. The year before, the Belgian already won the World Matchplay for the first time, and in 2021 he managed to reach the final again. This time, however, he was defeated by Peter Wright, despite throwing 11 180s in the final. The quarterfinal against Dave Chisnall (11-8 win) was his most productive match in that tournament, when he threw 14 180s.
Michael van Gerwen is in fourth place, having 180 45 times in the 2022 edition. 'MVG' managed to win the World Matchplay that year for the third time in his career. In the first round he only managed to throw the maximum score twice in his match against Adrian Lewis (10-7 win), but in the matches after that Van Gerwen started to find the triple 20 more easily.
In the Quarter-Final, "Mighty Mike" won 11-5 over Joe Cullen and threw 180 seven times, and the match after that he beat Nathan Aspinall `16-14 to reach the semifinals and managed to throw the maximum score 12 times. In that semifinal he faced Dimitri van den Bergh, and he too was defeated. Van Gerwen won 17-14 and managed to throw nine 180s. The final featured a duel with Gerwyn Price. Despite falling behind 0-4, the Dutchman won the match 18-14, throwing 15 180s.
Fifth place is shared by Phil Taylor (in 2009) and Nathan Aspinall (in 2023), who both managed to throw the maximum score 44 times. Both men also won the tournament the year they achieved this. 'The Power' convincingly won his final 18-4 over Terry Jenkins at the time and 'The Asp' managed to beat Jonny Clayton 18-6 last year.
With the current level and easy scoring players like Luke Humphries, Luke Littler and Michael Smith, we might just see a new name is this list after this year's edition.
