Gian van Veen has won his first PDC ranking title. After losing in the final of the fifth Players Championship of the year on Tuesday, he won the sixth Players Championship on Wednesday. In the final he defeated world number one Luke Humphries 8-3.
Van Veen had passed up six match darts unused in his final against Joe Cullen on Tuesday, but yesterday it worked out for the 22-year-old Dutchman. Understandably, there was huge relief for the World Youth Champion afterwards. "After what happened yesterday, this feels amazing," Van Veen reflected in his post-match interview afterwards. "I've had two incredible days here; I felt a bit hard done by yesterday and I was heartbroken after I lost the final, so to rectify that today is unbelievable."
"So I am very satisfied with how I played today. I was throwing high averages the whole time and it's extra nice when you can win the final against a great champion like Luke Humphries. I'm very proud of myself."
Van Veen has long seemed on the verge of a big, breakthrough win. So to finally become a ranking event winner is the next step taken in his impressive development.
"I've been playing well so far this year and my goal was to win a title; I knew I was the highest-ranked player without a ranking title," adds the Dutch star. "I've achieved that now and this win will give me massive confidence going into a busy next few weeks."
🗣️ "To make it right today... it's unbelievable!"
