Top seed Humphries edges past De Zwaan as Van Duijvenbode, Van den Bergh, Clayton all through at Players Championship 9

The top 16 seeds have played their opening ties at Players Championship 9 with top seed Luke Humphries among those through in Wigan.
Humphries edged past Jeffrey de Zwaan 6-4 with a 97 average, while second seed Dave Chisnall averaged 102 in seeing off Richie Burnett 6-5.
There were also wins for Jonny Clayton, Danny Noppert, Dimitri van den Bergh, Dirk van Duijvenbode, Ryan Searle, Josh Rock and Ross Smith.
Only main names out at this stage are Rob Cross who handed a walk-over to Mario Vandenbogaerde and 'The Stat Killer' Darryl Pilgrim who topped the averages at both ProTour and UK Open in 2022 and this year's tournament despite losing. He saw off Andrew Gilding 6-3 with a 100 average.

- Maybe the supposed top players are burnt out from the endless travelling and tournaments, I just don't think they have the dedication or outright desire to win. I think they are more interested in the money and being popular, just keeping their rankings steady. The only thing that mattered to Phil Taylor was winning, not winning a few games to top up the money pot and seeking the fans attention. Maybe there is too many tournaments now and the enthusiasm is gone. This year especially has seen so many different winners and unexpected draws and line ups.richieburnettrocks14-11-2024
