Raymond van Barneveld reached the third round at the
European Darts Matchplay in Trier on Saturday night by beating
Michael van Gerwen 6-3.
That result was a big success for 'Barney' and ensured he got back at Van Gerwen for a statement 'Mighty Mike' made after Van Gerwen's win over Van Barneveld on the Euro Tour earlier this season.
Ahead of that game, Van Barneveld referred to the match between him and Van Gerwen as a kind of Ajax versus Feyenoord. Van Gerwen seemed to disagree with that at the time. The Brabander compared himself to Bayern Munich and called Van Barneveld a kind of VFB Stuttgart, a club that finished 16th in the German Bundesliga.
That statement 'Barney' apparently had not forgotten. ''Sometimes Stuttgart can win over Bayern Munich after all,'' the 56-year-old Hague native rebounded the ball to his compatriot.
Van Barneveld did acknowledge, however, that Van Gerwen had not traveled to Trier in top form. ''For me he is the best player in the world, but now he didn't show his best game. But still I am extremely happy with this victory. My last victory over Michael was at a exhibition tournament several years ago. I am working hard, putting in a lot of training hours in my office and traveling a lot. All that hard work is starting to pay off now,'' Van Barneveld said.
However, the Dutch dart pioneer is not done in Riesa yet. ''I want to progress further. My goal is to eventually get into the top-16 of the Pro Tour Order of Merit, so I don't have to play those qualifiers anymore. Besides, I will then play on a Saturday night each time on the Euro Tours, which is so important. I've shown now that I can still do it.''
