Dimitri van den Bergh is through to the second round at the
World Grand Prix beginning his campaign with a straight sets win over
Michael Smith to conclude the opening night.
Van den Bergh of course as of late has been injured with his knee brace still remaining but that didn't dispel the World Matchplay champion who claimed it in style with a 132 checkout on the bull and a 96.4 average.
He began the first set with a flourish hitting an 11-darter in a deciding leg to begin a closely fought tie and at the time, he was averaging 102.8.
Smith took the lead in the early going of the second set as he looked to be in trouble with Van den Bergh leaving 59 and he had to get down from 150. He did so leaving 16 and when Van den Bergh missed his chance he held throw. He was well back in the requisite leg and a 14 darter saw The Dreammaker make it 1-1.
Smith looked to be motoring to the set making it 2-1 and holding once more but the holds continued as Van den Bergh forced a decider and like alluded to a stunning 132 checkout obscured the scoreline but handed the Belgian the victory.
