Now that PDC tournaments are being organised regularly again, it's a good time to bring back our 'Player of the Month' feature.
This player is chosen by this website based on his performance in the past month. With the re-launch of this category we also award the Player of the Month for April 2021.
This time, five players were eligible for this honorary award. José de Sousa, Michael Smith, Dirk van Duijvenbode and Dimitri van den Bergh were nominated because they won a title, while Nathan Aspinall was nominated because he was leading the Premier League Darts after nine rounds.
The choice fell on Van den Bergh, who won the most prize money during the PDC Super Series 3 after Van Duijvenbode. He also occupied the second place in the Premier League after nine nights.
Van den Bergh started his first season in the Premier League Darts in April and with five wins, three draws and only one defeat in his first nine matches, he proved he has his place among the best darts players in the world. The two-time world youth champion led the Premier League five times and eventually finished the first half of the season in April as number two, with the same number of points as number one Aspinall.
A week and a half before the Super Series (April 24-27), Van den Bergh indicated in an interview that he needs to improve in the floor tournaments. The Belgian however was confident that also there the results would follow soon.
That expectation was fulfilled at the end of April in Niedernhausen. On the final day of the Super Series he won his first Pro Tour title by beating Van Duijvenbode, who claimed his maiden PDC title the day before.
With this victory over fellow contender Van Duijvenbode, Van den Bergh can rightfully call himself best player of the month April 2021.
