Dirk van Duijvenbode is through to the Last 16 at the 2020/21 PDC World Darts Championship after a stunning display to defeat Adam Hunt.
Hunt like Ricky Evans against Van Duijvenbode's compatriot Van Gerwen last year didn't do a lot wrong but was beaten by 'The Aubergenius' who produced 12/24 (50%) on the finishing, a 104 average and four 180's.
'The Hunter' himself hit nine 180's and a 97 average but came out of it without a set. Next up for the Dutchman could be Glen Durrant or Danny Baggish who face off in the bumper session on Monday evening.
It was a high quality opening set which went to Van Duijvenbode who fired in an 82 checkout in the deciding leg in an opening set which included a brilliant 170 from ‘The Aubergenius’.
His grasp on the tie continued as despite three 180’s being hit by Hunt, Van Duijvenbode took the second set 3-1 with a 120 checkout finishing the set and to double his advantage.
Hunt like in the first set went 2-1 up and towards potentially claiming a set but despite Hunt firing in a 180, two in a row followed from the Dutchman and he hit a 48 checkout to send it to a decider where he’d have the throw.
Hunt wouldn’t go down without a fight and began the following leg with a 180 but Van Duijvenbode quelled this with a brilliant 114 checkout.
Van Duijvenbode could have added a 148 missing double 20 but he still broke to begin the fourth set as Hunt missed a 106.
Hunt hit his ninth 180 but he couldn’t get close with a 76 checkout on double 18 seeing DvDB go one away from a superb win. The Hunter survived and stayed in the match as match darts passed Van Duijvenbode by.
Van Duijvenbode left 40 off a 133 which he cleaned up to claim victory.
