Vincent van der Voort is through to the Last 16 at the 2020/21 PDC
World Darts Championship after seeing off sixth seed Nathan Aspinall in a 4-2 win.
Van der Voort followed his compatriot, Dirk van Duijvenbode with a superb start but had to withstand a comeback from Aspinall. Despite that though, it was the day of 'The Dutch Destroyer' who next will face Chris Dobey or Daryl Gurney after a 93 average, eight 180's and 38% on the doubles.
Van der Voort produced a blistering start to proceedings
taking out the opening set without reply. He averaged 115.6 with three 180’s
and finishes of 110 and 121 as he took the game to ‘The Asp’.
It was soon a 2-0 lead to ‘The Dutch Destroyer’ as Aspinall
watched him make it six legs without reply to double his lead and when it
looked like Aspinall was going to gain a foothold in the tie, Van der Voort
slammed the door shut with a 113 checkout.
But Aspinall wasn’t done, he took out 81 to claim the third
set 3-1 with a 12-darter and halve the deficit. He followed that up with double
20 after a brilliant 136 leave.
It was soon getting too close to comfort for Van der Voort
as a 174 to leave 36 left Van der Voort chasing 138 for a hold of throw.
Van der Voort was given a chance though in the following to
break back with Aspinall missing double 16 for a 108 and the former was back
for 50.
A 180 followed by 69 saw Van der Voort pile the pressure on
Aspinall. The latter tried to rise to it with his third 180 and he did with
double 16 to level it up at 2-2 in sets.
In the following set, Aspinall missed double 16 to break and
Van der Voort pinned a pivotal 56 to lead. Van der Voort hit a pressure 180 despite
Aspinall going six darts into a nine-darter and with the Stockport ace failing
to grasp the opportunity, the former pinned 54 to break.
It was Aspinall’s turn to pinch a leg though with Van der
Voort failing to find the mark off leaving 40 and the former hit 60 to break.
It was another break though for Van der Voort who himself
helped himself to a 3-2 sets lead with double four. A 74 checkout made it two
consecutive breaks to begin the fifth and it was a 180 to kick off as he looked
to go towards the finishing line with double 16.
Van der Voort didn’t go for the 121 leaving 32 finely poised
and he pinned it to move through to the Last 16.
