Van Gerwen after claiming UK Open title with victory over Price: “It means a lot for me to win this tournament”

Michael van Gerwen claimed his first title of the year last night in the form of the UK Open with the World Number One seeing off Gerwyn Price in an astonishing final.

It saw Van Gerwen go 5-1 down and as he made his comeback and go into the subsequent lead, Price had darts in most legs for the rest of the match and could have been away with ease.

Despite that in only Van Gerwen can do, he surged back into life by bouncing on these mistakes and went on to claim his third UK Open title and he reflected on his tournament in the aftermath.

"It's an incredible win and it means a lot to me to win this tournament," said Van Gerwen.

"I've had a phenomenal tournament and the pressure was on me.

"It was a hard day for me, I had to play three Premier League players and it was not easy but I played really good darts and didn't do a lot wrong.

"The nine-darter was fantastic but with the way I was playing it was just a matter of time. That's just one leg though and I had to keep my focus.

"Gerwyn had his chances in the final but I took good advantage and I never missed a chance. That was important, so I only can be happy with this."
