𝙑𝘼𝙉 𝙂𝙀𝙍𝙒𝙀𝙉 𝙒𝙄𝙉𝙎 WHAT A GAME THAT WAS! Ryan Murray played superbly to test Michael van Gerwen, but the World Number One posts a stunning 108.98 average - the highest of the tournament so far - to reach the Third Round.
Michael van Gerwen has began his bid for a fourth PDC World Darts Championship crown with a brilliant 109 average to defeat Ryan Murray 3-1.
But despite the high average, Van Gerwen was pushed all the way by the impressive Scot.
He will take on Ricky Evans or Mickey Mansell after Christmas but the World Number One has set down an early mark at the Alexandra Palace.
Van Gerwen breezed through his opening set in consecutive legs with the World Number One looking to make light work of 'Muzz Lightyear'.
But Murray who was history against Van Gerwen with the latter hitting two nine-darters in the same match wasn't to be underestimated.
He produced a brilliant 61 checkout in the deciding leg to make it 1-1 and ask the question of Mighty Mike.
He answered regaining control by sealing the third set 3-1 with his average going up to 108 with 47% on the doubles.
Murray took out 124 on the bull to hit the front in the next set and after Van Gerwen squandered three match darts, Murray forced a deciding leg.
But he couldn't force a deciding set missing one dart at double 20 to force it and Van Gerwen was back as ever to hit a 76 checkout to end Murray's hopes.
