Van Gerwen eases past Rock to seal first ranking title of 2023 at Players Championship 7

Michael van Gerwen may have won a hat-trick of Premier League nights but has not sealed a ranking tournament yet but that has changed today with the Green Machine sealing Sunday's Players Championship 7 in Hildesheim.

Van Gerwen has been poor on the ProTour at times this season with early exits but looked at his imperious best at times today when it mattered most seeing off Josh Rock 8-4 in the final.

Rock hit first with a 56 checkout to hold. With Rock waiting on double 20, MVG hit 70 to level. He broke from there on double 10 for 2-1. A 62 checkout saw Van Gerwen hold after a miss at double 16 for 112 from Rock.

Rock hit double 16 to go 3-2 down. Van Gerwen missed 126 on double six with Rock only able to pressure and MVG hit the target to go 4-2 up. It became 5-2 with a break.

An 85 checkout saw Rock break back at 5-3 down. MVG missed 68 for a break again but Rock missed more darts at double only to be gifted another opportunity to make it 5-4. A 52 checkout saw that cushion reopened again at 6-4 to MVG. A 50 checkout saw MVG go one away. A 48 checkout then sealed it.
