Van Gerwen out of World Cup of Darts due to surgery

A change in the Dutch team just before the start of the World Cup of Darts. Michael van Gerwen has withdrawn, while Dirk van Duijvenbode will take his place.

Van Gerwen underwent scheduled surgery on his teeth on Monday and has not yet recovered sufficiently to play in the Nations tournament this weekend in Frankfurt.

As Dirk van Duijvenbode is the second highest-ranked Dutch player on the PDC Order of Merit, he will now play alongside Danny Noppert for the second consecutive year.

Also last year, Van Duijvenbode had to replace his compatriot Van Gerwen because 'Mighty Mike' had to undergo surgery. At the time, Van Gerwen went under the knife to be treated for carpal tunnel syndrome.

The adjustment in the Dutch team means the Netherlands is now the third series head at the World Cup of Darts. Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton are now seeded second with Wales. England leads the placing list with Michael Smith and Rob Cross.
