Van Gerwen returns to winners' circle after victory over superb Sherrock in Nordic Darts Masters final

Michael van Gerwen has returned to the winners' circle for the first time since last November with an 11-7 victory over Fallon Sherrock in the final of the Nordic Darts Masters in Copenhagen.

While Van Gerwen has claimed his first title since the Players Championship Finals ending his longest barren spell while at the top, the story of the final will remain with Sherrock who dared to dream at 7-5 up.

But as MVG got stronger, the pressure tolled for the Milton Keynes ace who couldn't reproduce her earlier heroics and it is Mighty Mike who takes the title home.

To begin the tie, Van Gerwen got to the task in hand and doubled his lead breaking throw with a 110 checkout.

But a first 180 and a 65 finish saw Sherrock break back and halve the deficit and by the first interval, she was claiming three legs on the spin to suddenly lead 3-2.

Van Gerwen hit back immediately after the interval to make it 3-3 but Sherrock continued to be incredible on the outer ring going two clear at 5-3.

Before pouncing to go three clear at 6-3 up after Van Gerwen missed double 20. A vital double four handed MVG the break back but at the halfway stage of the final, she was leading 6-4.

It was back-to-back legs for MVG as he looked to restore parity with a 122 checkout to make it 6-5.

Sherrock missed double 18 for a 101 checkout but returned after Van Gerwen missed 154 to level and the Milton Keynes ace made it 7-5.

Sherrock hit a 180 but a bounceout denied leaving her a finish on her next turn so Van Gerwen laid up for 32 to make it 7-6.

The pressure came for Van Gerwen but he was superb smashing in a 85 finish with Sherrock sat on 36.

He had turned it around as despite missing doubles, MVG was given a second chance with Sherrock not on a finish and took it to make it 8-7 to lead at the final interval.

Sherrock couldn't get a shot at 128 and Van Gerwen went two away at 9-7 up with another break. He continued to move up the gears hitting another 180 leaving 32 from a 132 set up to go one away.

Again Sherrock was on 128 but despite hitting the treble 18, she couldn't find a shot for the break and Van Gerwen pinned double four to make it 10-7.

Sherrock left 36 but Van Gerwen pinned 80 to claim the title to end his barren spell finally.
