Michael van Gerwen is on the verge of his first title of the year after seeing off Jonny Clayton in a 11-7 victory to reach the final of the
Nordic Darts Masters.
Van Gerwen will now face Fallon Sherrock shortly as he aims to add another
World Series title to his collection after seeing off 'The Ferret' who has had a hoodoo of sorts over MVG in recent times.
The Premier League champion was aiming to make a late comeback but the legs ran out and the Dutchman surged through with a 102.8 average, three 180's and 52% on the doubles.
Will Sherrock achieve darting destiny or will Mighty Mike wrestle it away and return to the winners' circle?
To begin the tie, Clayton was in the lead early on against Van Gerwen pinning double one to go 2-1 up but MVG soon levelled with a 92 checkout for an 11-darter.
'The Ferret' kept ahead with a 106 checkout to go 3-2 up at the interval but on return, his lead didn't last long as MVG produced a dominant spell with a double break to go 6-3 up with a 106 average.
At the second interval, Van Gerwen led 7-3 but Clayton sparked into life once more defying six perfect darts from MVG to go 7-4 down.
MVG recovered with a 112 checkout but Clayton made it 8-5 with an 11-darter and at the interval, he made it 9-6 - a break was needed though to get back towards MVG with the legs running out.
Clayton missed 121 on the bull though and his chances were diminishing as Van Gerwen went one away at 10-6 up.
MVG was throwing for the match but was left needing 144 with Clayton leaving 110. But he drifted into treble one and Van Gerwen claimed it with an 86 checkout.
