Van Gerwen seals comfortable win over Whitlock, set to face Searle in Austrian Darts Open Quarter-Finals

Michael van Gerwen is through to the quarter-finals at the Austrian Darts Open. An average of 92 was enough for a 6-2 victory over Simon Whitlock.

Van Gerwen took a 1-0 lead via a 100 finish and then made it 2-0 via a 13-darter. A 17-darter and a 16-darter then ensured a 4-0 lead.

Whitlock then finally got on the scoreboard via a 25 check-out, but Van Gerwen then put the margin back to a four-leg difference with a 15-darter. The Dutchman could have decided the game in the seventh leg, but missed two matchdarts.

Whitlock then managed to extend the match slightly by finishing 41. A leg later, Van Gerwen finished it off with a fine 124 finish. In the last eight, the three-time world champion will play Ryan Searle. 'Heavy Metal' triumphed against Rob Cross 6-3 thanks to an average of 104.
