Michael van Gerwen is back in the winners' circle on the
European Tour after seeing off Luke Humphries 8-6 at the
Belgian Darts Open in Wieze.
A game separated by missed chances by Humphries which Van Gerwen took to the hilt, it is a second ranking title of the season after a ProTour win and it is a fourth European Tour final loss of the season for Humphries.
Humphries and Van Gerwen exchanged early holds with the former leading 3-2. Van Gerwen’s best chance was missing 82 for a break.
Humphries was down to 71 on MVG’s throw and took aim with the latter missing the treble for 120 but he returned with a double 20 missed by ‘Cool Hand Luke’ and it was 3-3.
Humphries was on a nine-dart finish but he missed double 12 only to return for a 10-darter to make it 4-3. He made it 5-4 to lead but missed 126 on double six and MVG took out 50 to break and go two away at 6-5.
Humphries missed two more darts to break and Van Gerwen went one away at 7-5. Humphries missed more darts at doubles and Van Gerwen missed 152 for the win.
Humphries finally hit a double again on double seven to make it 7-6 but MVG took out 48 for the win.
