The opening day of the Grand Slam of Darts is complete with no shocks for Michael van Gerwen and Jonny Clayton who have sealed victories to end Saturday's action.

Van Gerwen produced the highest average of the day with 101.5 as he saw off Nathan Rafferty in a 5-2 win with three 180's and a high checkout of 126 with 83.3% (5/6 on the doubles).

The Dutchman has won all Sky Sports televised tournaments outside of the World Championship this season and staked his claim after seeing off the Northern Irishman who could've been an early banana skin especially over the short format.

But the 126 started it off followed by a break to go 2-1 up which was consolidated with an 82 checkout. Rafferty sealed his only other leg in the tie with a 120 checkout but the break was the difference as Van Gerwen opened up the gap again and broke in the final leg on double 20 for the win.

While for Clayton, it was a routine 5-0 win against Leonard Gates in another game that could have been construed as a tricky test especially considering his record on TV this year compared to last.

But he stood up to the test and sealed the impetus in Group F with a 92 average, 45.5% on the doubles and only allowing Gates one dart to win a leg during the tie. He will go through to face Jermaine Wattimena tomorrow with a great chance of moving through especially due to the legs won tonight.
