Michael van Gerwen heads to Blackpool as defending champion, where the 30th edition of the World Matchplay is scheduled from July 15 to 23.

The three-time world champion is in excellent form, as evidenced by final victories at the Premier League Darts, US Darts Masters and Poland Darts Masters in recent weeks.
Between the World Series tournaments in New York and Warsaw, 'Mighty Mike' did undergo painful dental surgery, from which Van Gerwen is still recovering.
Last year, Van Gerwen captured his third title at the World Matchplay by defeating Gerwyn Price 18-14 in the final. Previously, 'Mighty Mike' was the best in Blackpool in 2015 and 2016.
“It has been a really tough period, but the most important thing is you have to stand up and you have to battle,” said Van Gerwen.
“It costs a lot of energy, but I always say if I am competing in something, I want to win it, and this tournament will be no different.
“I’m looking forward to the World Matchplay already. It’s one of the biggest tournaments we have, I want to play well and I want to defend my title.

“I always have pressure on my shoulders but I don't mind that. I'm winning tournaments again and that gives you confidence.”

The draw for the 2023 World Matchplay has been made and the number one seeded World Champion Michael Smith will face Steve Beaton in the first round. However the outstanding tie is without a shadow of a doubt: Dave Chisnall versus Gary Anderson.
