Van Gerwen withdraws from PDC World Darts Championship after positive COVID-19 test, Dobey receives bye to Last 16

For a second day in a row, the evening session at the 2021/22 PDC World Darts Championship will see only two matches with Michael van Gerwen testing positive today (Tuesday) for COVID-19.

Van Gerwen was due to face off against Chris Dobey this evening and had to enter a negative COVID-19 test before play but this has now come back positive.

This after his close friend, Vincent van der Voort who he spent Christmas with in the UK tested positive before his match with James Wade last night.

As well as Raymond van Barneveld who faced the same fate but after he had already lost to Rob Cross before the Christmas break.

Dirk van Duijvenbode who also spent Christmas with the duo won through yesterday against Ross Smith and so is negative as of time of writing ahead of his tie with Gerwyn Price in the next two days.

Dobey will now receive a bye to the Last 16 and will face the winner of Dave Chisnall and Luke Humphries. The evening session will now continue but only with Rob Cross - Daryl Gurney and Peter Wright - Damon Heta.
