Kleermaker survives unlikely comeback from Cullen to continue dream World Darts Championship debut

Martijn Kleermaker is into the Last 16 on debut at the 2021/22 PDC World Darts Championship but not without a comeback from his opponent Joe Cullen in winning on the tiebreak.

Kleermaker took out 88 on the bull to win it after Cullen had come back from 3-0 down in sets to send it all the way but it is the Dutchman who moves through in a 4-3 win.

Kleermaker stormed through the opener with no reply as he was hitting 75% on the doubles and this was a theme of the opening exchanges as Cullen did not get a leg until the eleventh attempt.

This allowed the Dutchman to storm into a 2-0 sets lead which was extended further to a 3-0 lead as he watched Cullen squander two set darts before pinning double 20 to go towards the finishing line.

Cullen snatched a set back though and started to grow back into the game albeit surviving a match dart as he made it to 3-2 behind. He came from 2-0 down to claim it with a 111 checkout.

But as he added another set, he swept the sixth to make it parity and send it the distance as Kleermaker looked to dent the turnaround.

Cullen made it seven legs in a row with a 62 checkout but Kleermaker replied with a 130 checkout and was soon one away.

He missed one at double 20 under severe pressure from the crowd and it went to a tiebreak but Kleermaker under the pressure ended the comeback hopes to win through.
