Gian Van Veen has kept hopes of qualifying for the World Grand Prix well and truly alive as he reaches round 3 of the Hungarian Darts Trophy. Luke Humphries joins him in the next round.
Although Van Veen went into his second round tie with World Matchplay champion Nathan Aspinall as the underdog, the vastly talented young Dutchman quickly laid down and marker, with an opening leg 180. After moving three ahead, Aspinall did pull one back but Van Veen was simply on another level as he romped to a 6-1 victory.
The next second round tie followed a similar pattern although this time it was the seeded player who was always in control. Humphries was somewhere near his best as he averaged over 108 in sweeping aside a helpless Keane Barry 6-2 with three 180s and 6/11 on the doubles.
