Michael Smith starts Friday's PDC World Darts Championship as the defending champion after beating Michael van Gerwen 7-4 in last year's final.
History was made during the match in more than one way for Smith. In the third leg of the second set, after first Van Gerwen missed double twelve for a nine darter, Smith then managed to throw a nine darter. This to the delight of the crowd and also of Sky Sports commentator Wayne Mardle, who went bananas in the commentary box, uttering the now infamous line, 'I can't spake! I can't spake!"
Leading up to this World Championship, Smith and Gerwyn Price were allowed to recreate the commentary of this iconic piece of darting history thanks to tournament sponsor Paddy Power.

- I completely agree with Vincent's comments on "whistlegate". It's great to have someone with Vincent's exprience address this issue, so hopefully clearer and stricter guidlelines can be given to referees, security and members of the crowd. No whistling during throws, and something like: whistlers evicted and fined a hefty sum.
