In the run-up to the resumption of the Premier League Darts on April 19, DartsNews looks back at each participant and how they started the competition. This time the attention turns to Jose de Sousa.
A lot was expected from De Sousa in the Premier League and in some ways, he has delivered albeit while being unlucky in certain aspects. Currently sitting ninth, it paints a different picture but he has played some good darts.
Especially in the first two games, The Special One dropped points that were there for the taking. De Sousa was unable to cash in on a 6-4 lead against Rob Cross and therefore had to settle for a draw. A day later he got three match darts for a draw against Gary Anderson, but that point was also lost.
Against Jonny Clayton, De Sousa then threw a high average of 108.48, but that didn't lead to points. The win went 7-3 to Clayton, who recorded a nine-darter.
During the fourth round of play, De Sousa himself hit a nine-dart finish, but he did not utilise his one match dart for the win. As a result, Nathan Aspinall also managed to snatch one point.
At the end of the first block, the so called Portuguese Man O' Scores' first victory in the Premier League finally came. Thanks to an average of more than 104, Dimitri van den Bergh was defeated 7-3.
In summary, De Sousa is playing a fine first Premier League for the time being, but is not getting the reward. A good week this time around could see him in good stead though as he has the tools to trouble the best.
