Joe Cullen and
Mensur Suljovic faced each other again this Tuesday afternoon at Players Championship 2 for the first time since their heated clash in the second round of the 2026 World Darts Championship. And just like then, it was the Austrian who came out on top. This time, however, things were handled much more amicably.
In the second round of the last World Darts Championship,
Joe Cullen and
Mensur Suljovic met in round two. The match would eventually turn into one of the spiciest encounters of the tournament. Suljovic won the match, but according to Cullen, ‘The Gentle’ had cheated.
Cullen started the match strongest in December and took the first set 3-0. The second set went 3-1 to the Austrian, and that’s when the trouble began. From the third set onward, Suljovic celebrated extensively after every leg he won, then walked to the edge of the stage and took all the time in the world before returning to the oche. This led to visible frustration for ‘The Rockstar’.
Suljovic edged the last two sets 3-2, after which a fierce exchange broke out between the two on stage at the end of the match. The accusations continued in interviews afterward as well.
Cullen called Suljovic a ‘cheater’ and felt the Austrian acted like a jerk.
New showdown on the floor
This Tuesday afternoon the pair met again at Players Championship 2. And just like at Alexandra Palace, it was
Mensur Suljovic who managed to close out the match. This time without all the fuss at the end.
Suljovic produced a superb display and, helped by three 15-darters and two 14-darters, won 6-2 against the Englishman. He finished with an average just over 101. The most striking moment, however, came after the final double. Cullen and Suljovic shook hands with a smile, and in the background you could hear Cullen say: “You can play normal can’t you, see. You can play normal.”
It is good to see that both men have left last December’s incident behind and can move forward on good terms again.
