After two and a half weeks of darts spectacle with several spectacular matches, tonight it is finally time for the most important match of all: the final of the PDC World Darts Championship. Michael van Gerwen, a three-time world champion, will take on 17-year-old Luke Littler. The teenage sensation hopes to make history by capturing his first world title.
Vincent van der Voort, who was present at the Alexandra Palace venue on Thursday night to cheer on Van Gerwen in his semi-final against Chris Dobey, is looking forward to the final. The Dutchman spoke in Sportnieuws.nl's podcast Darts Draait Door about 'MVG's' chances of winning his fourth world title, among other things.
"This is a dream final. I'm looking forward to it tremendously," opined Van der Voort, who also looked back at both Van Gerwen's and Littler's semifinals. "Michael was not great today, but just good. Dobey didn't show up at all, though. In the end it was a relatively easy win, even though 6-1 might have been a bit flattered," he looked back on 'Mighty Mike's' semifinal.
As for Littler's semifinal, Van der Voort saw that the 17-year-old did face more opposition from his opponent Stephen Bunting. "I think Bunting didn't play bad over the whole match, only he was just the lesser on the decisive moments each time. Then you still just go up 6-1. Littler managed to punish all those moments perfectly. This was his best match at the World Cup so far, though."
As mentioned earlier, this is the "dream final" for Van der Voort, in which he is gambling that the 17-year-old has one edge over his compatriot after all. "I think Littler is the favorite beforehand anyway if you look at their matches at this tournament. If Michael can stay with it from the beginning of the match, I give him a very good chance. Littler has some more 12-darter and 11-darters in there but also some more legs over 15 darts. It's just very hard to predict," he concludes.
