Vincent van der Voort thinks compatriot Wessel Nijman could possibly cause a surprise at the World Darts Championships. The young Dutchman made a big impression in his first Pro Tour season, including winning a Players Championship tournament.

In the podcast Darts Draait Door, Van der Voort was asked which darter could possibly become a sensation at Alexandra Palace. "Then you have to go for someone outside the top 32 and the first name everyone thinks of then is Wessel Nijman," replied 'Fast Vinnie'.

Van der Voort cited Nijman's draw as a reason why the 24-year-old Dutchman might do well. "He comes up against people who are not in good shape. Only of course it is always the question whether it will work out at the World Championship, because there will also be a lot of pressure on him."

Nijman made his World Darts Championship debut last year, losing in the first round to Steve Beaton. This time he starts against South African dart player Cameron Carolissen, while a win would mean a meeting with Joe Cullen. There are certainly chances in that duel, as Cullen has not shown great form this year.

Recently, Nijman showed well at the Grand Slam of Darts. Although Nijman lost all of his group matches, he recorded averages of 106, 105 and 111. Van der Voort does not think these results are going to negatively affect Nijman.

"He's too level-headed for that," Van der Voort stated. The darter from Purmerend then recounted an event earlier this year, when he was in the car with Nijman. "He didn't perform well, but saw in lists that he was reasonably on top in terms of average. Then he also said: that can't keep going wrong. He is realistic though and also knows that if he keeps throwing those kind of averages the wins will come naturally."
