For Michael van Gerwen, the 2025 PDC Winmau World Masters ended in a major disappointment. The 35-year-old Dutchman went down 3-2 against Dimitri Van den Bergh after a particularly spectacular match in the last sixteen on Saturday night in Milton Keynes.
Van Gerwen had started the match with the clear mental advantage, after all, in his entire career, he had only ever lost a single match against his Belgian opponent in competition. In truth, it was a very enjoyable match that Van Gerwen and Van den Bergh presented to the audience in Milton Keynes. Van Gerwen trailed 2-1 in sets, but after Van den Bergh missed two chances on the outer ring to make it 3-1, Van Gerwen turned that to a 3-2 lead in his favour. In the end it became 3-3 and a seventh set had to decide the match. In that last set Van Gerwen missed several chances in the first and second leg and Van den Bergh was able to take advantage of that to win the match.
Van Gerwen ended with a slightly higher average than Van den Bergh, but it was the latter who took the win. "I made way too many mistakes in that last set," Van Gerwen admitted honestly in a post-match interview with Dutch broadcasters Viaplay. "I gave it away completely in that last one, that just shouldn't happen to me and I bitterly regret that. I felt I was the better player, but then you get it over the line and I didn't do that."
Van Gerwen was clearly hugely disappointed in the result. "This is just unacceptable. Normally I am someone who makes few mistakes when you can finish it, but today I shortchanged myself so incredibly hard," the Dutchman concludes. "During the first six sets, however, I hardly made any mistakes. I can only blame myself for this."
