Michael van Gerwen will not for the second straight year take to the oche at the Bahrain Darts Masters and there is a similar reason to his 2024 absence behind that.

Van Gerwen decided last year to take a holiday in what is perhaps a wise move given the nature of the season with many players experiencing burn out over the course of the 2024 season especially in the darting elite.

MVG being such a high status in the game can afford to snub World Series tournaments and still get invites as part of the clamoured for list of players from these countries.

He took to his Instagram to share that he will be going on holiday instead of playing in Bahrain and then he will get ready for the 2025 season.

"Full credit to Luke Littler for an incredible tournament and well-deserved win in the final. Thank you to all my fans and sponsors for the amazing support throughout; it means the world! Now it’s time for a holiday and getting ready for the challenges in 2025," said Van Gerwen earlier this week.

He often shares images of his holidays on his social media so no doubt he will once more. It won't be a quiet month though for the World finalist as he will still play Den Bosch and also the World Masters. This as a result shares why he has made such a decision to not play in Bahrain.

Following that the season ramps up with the Premier League and also the UK Open in March as well as the start of the ProTour season in February with many of the early tournaments in the first month.

So while those who are playing in all tournaments in January likely will have to use those as a rest, Van Gerwen can attack the ranking action. But for those paying for the Bahrain tournament, it is perhaps a shame for them that MVG will not play the tournament again. But it is the peril of changing it to the early January slot in the immediacy of a tough World Championship campaign.
